After many auditions, the band recruited Sweden's Anette Olzon who joined the band for 2 albums and their own feature film, Imaginaerum. Versailles - Also known as Versailles -Philharmonic Quintet- in America. They were a Japanese visual kei band who dressed in Rococo fashions and played elaborate symphonic metal. Although not hugely well-known elsewhere in the world, they had 5 successful albums in Japan. Their bassist Jasmine You sadly died in 2009 and the band finally split up in 2012, with members moving onto other projects.
Van Canto - Although not technically symphonic metal and perhaps not technically even a band (bear with me), they are a capella geniuses. Formed in 2006, the band have 5 singers and a drummer, with the singers playing the part of all the instruments. They are largely inspired by symphonic and melodic metal. Van Canto are notable in the scene for their covers of songs like Wishmaster by Nightwish, and also for their guest appearances on Tarja's second album, and singer Inga Scharf on Heidi Parviainen's Dark Sarah project.

This is really cool! I have a few suggestions: Angra, Diabulus in Musica, and Diablo Swing Orchestra
Thank you Phil! I actually add Diabulus in Musica on my list, not sure how I missed them out, haha. I'll add your suggestions.
Wow that's a really awesome list that you have here !!
Also with the short history and description from each band, good job !
Actually, I knew most of them, but I'm glad to discover some new ones. I want to suggest you to add few more bands: Forgotten Tales (between Power & Symphonic Metal from Québec, Canada), Angtoria (with the singer of Cradle of Filth), Adrana, Amaranthe, Arven, Atargatis, Silentium (Revangelis song is awesome)
I have seen some Symphonic metal bands with some Power Metal sounds in your list, so I suggest: Angra, Blind Guardian
Blind Guardian, Forgotten Tales, Angtoria and Atargatis are all on the list already - in the "see also" bits underneath each letter. I didn't know Adrana, Arven or Silentium though so thanks for those! I won't add Amaranthe because they don't have any symphonic elements, though I'm a big fan of the band.
First of all, you have done a fabulous job on this project that I'm sure took a great deal of time. I was excited to find this site as I had been considering doing much the same thing. Having said that would you have a problem with me posting a link to here from my Google+ account Metal Maven?
Secondly, I was glad to see Lacuna Coil included in the "see also" list as their earlier albums certainly had a symphonic edge to them. One more band to consider: Elessar from Argentina. Check out their "Dark Desires" video on YouTube.
Hi Metal Maven - thank you so much for your comment. I would certainly be happy for you to link to here!
Thanks for the suggestion, I hadn't heard of them. And you've reminded me of some other new bands that I need to add.
Great work !
Some groups to add or consider : Jaded Star (with Maxi Nil) and Sleeping Romance.
Thanks for the comment, Jonathan! Jaded Star hadn't released an album when I wrote the guide, but now that they have I'm happy to add them. I shall add Sleeping Romance to the list, too.
Wow, wow, double wow! You have given me some more to explore. I need to order stuff from HMV a bit more and buy more CDs - I love Nightwish, Within Temptation, Sonata Arctica, Delain. Lacuna Coil, Tarja, Xandria ... but there is so much out there. Thank you, thank you, thank you sooooooo much!
No problem Nyssa, hope you find some great bands!
Amazing!! :D Glad to see Elessär here, they're from Neuquén, Argentina, it's near to Zapala, my city of origin! :D
I have to say, though, that I was surprised to seeing Lacuna Coil, Enemy of Reality and Dark Sarah only in the "See also" section :O
I suggest you Abyssic, symphonic / black metal band from Norway, it inludes members of Susperia (Memnoch on vocals, guitars, contrabass) and Sirenia (Henriette Bordvik on bass), among others; Ancient Bards from Italy, with singer Sara Squadrani (now, this I was really really surprised that they weren't on the list); Aesma Deva from USA, still active but haven't put anything new for years, their current singer is Lori Lewis (Therion) and formerly they had Melissa Ferlaak (ex Visions of Atlantis); Alice in Darkland, solo project of Alice Elizabeth Chiarelli (former live keyboardist of Lacuna Coil), though their latest effort dates of 2007.
Greetings! :)
Lureaway is a Symphonic metal band from Riga, Latvia, founded in 2015.Music of Lureaway is an exciting combination of charming soprano, melodic symphonic elements, heavy guitar riffs, and energetic drum beats. The first EP record “Saviour” was published back in 2016, with "Unchained and Soaring" being Lureaway’s first full album.
